Security guards at Moroccan hospitals denounce exploitation, reject blame for system failure

Morocco’s National Union of Private Security, Cleaning, and Cooking Staff defended hospital security guards, saying their interactions with patients at hospital gates fall under “guidance duties” defined in their contracts.

Responding to what it called “misleading public debate” about misconduct in the health sector, the union said guards work over 12 hours daily for salaries under 2,000 dirhams, with no benefits or social insurance, often under threat of dismissal.

Union leader Loubna Najib told Hespress that guards act on hospital instructions and face verbal and physical assaults without legal protection. She warned that “illegal brokers” operate outside public hospitals, exploiting patients seeking care.

The statement also denounced “inhumane conditions” faced by cleaning workers, some earning as little as 700 dirhams monthly without contracts or CNSS registration. The union said these workers are being unfairly blamed for the failures of public administration and a “corrupt, exploitative system.”
