Morocco thwarts major cocaine smuggling attempts amid heightened border vigilance

Moroccan security forces have maintained maximum alert levels in the fight against international drug trafficking, intercepting two major cocaine shipments on Saturday, one at Tangier Med Port and another at the Guerguerat border crossing, in coordination with customs services.

According to security sources cited by Hespress, the simultaneous operations reflect tight coordination between the national police and the domestic intelligence agency (DGST).

Authorities seized 33 kilograms of raw cocaine concealed in an international freight container at Tangier Med, while over 53 kilograms were intercepted at Guerguerat in the far south. Analysts say the pattern points to a shift in trafficking routes, turning the southern crossing into a strategic hub for networks funneling cocaine toward European markets through West Africa.

Security analyst Mohamed Essam Laaroussi described the busts as proof of Morocco’s “proactive security posture,” stressing that early detection and border control are central to disrupting organized crime.

He noted that traffickers often exploit crises and unrest to expand activity but emphasized that Morocco’s border integrity remains intact, with preventive monitoring continuing daily despite local demonstrations.

Laaroussi underscored the importance of regional intelligence coordination with Spain and Mauritania, supported by drones, radar systems, and high-precision surveillance cameras that have made Guerguerat one of the most secure border zones since 2018. He linked the effort to Morocco’s broader goal of countering transnational crime and extremist militias, including elements linked to the Polisario.

Mohamed Nachtaoui, head of the Ibn Rochd Center for Geopolitical Studies, said intensified European scrutiny of Latin American routes has pushed traffickers toward North and West African corridors.

He dismissed claims that domestic protests could weaken border control, noting that Moroccan agencies maintain robust detection capabilities and active intelligence sharing with international partners.

Both experts agreed that Morocco’s challenge now lies in tracking evolving smuggling strategies while sustaining anticipatory, intelligence-driven security to prevent the kingdom from becoming a transit point for hard drugs bound for Europe.
