Thousands of Moroccans poured into the streets of Rabat on Sunday to mark two years since the outbreak of Israel’s war on Gaza, in one of the largest pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the capital since 2023.
Organized by the National Action Group for Palestine and the Moroccan Front for the Support of Palestine and Against Normalization, the rally brought together citizens of all ages, political affiliations, and regions under the slogan “One voice for Morocco: Against genocide, against normalization, with the resistance.”
Starting at Bab El Had Square and marching toward Parliament, protesters waved Palestinian flags, burned an Israeli flag, and chanted “Death to Israel” while calling normalization with Tel Aviv a “national disgrace.”
The march took place amid renewed diplomatic moves in the Middle East, including Hamas’s positive response to a U.S.-backed proposal on prisoner exchanges and Israel’s interception of the Freedom Flotilla that sought to deliver aid to Gaza.
Security forces heavily guarded the area as demonstrators condemned what they described as a war of starvation and destruction waged by Israel, while urging the Moroccan government to cut all forms of normalization.
Abderrahim Chikhi, former president of the Movement for Unity and Reform and a participant in the Freedom Flotilla, told Hespress that “the massive turnout reaffirms the Moroccan people’s unwavering solidarity with Palestine and their rejection of genocide.”
He described the protest as part of an unbroken chain of mobilizations since October 7, 2023, emphasizing that the demand to end the blockade and stop the war “has now become a national consensus.”
Chikhi also praised Hamas’s “measured and responsible” response to the latest U.S. plan, saying it reflected political maturity and collective Palestinian decision-making. “While hopes for a ceasefire exist, doubts remain about Israel’s willingness to honor any agreement,” he said.
Abdelhafid Sriti, coordinator of the National Action Group for Palestine, said the march was “a continuation of a historical stance rooted in Moroccan solidarity since the 1930s.” He added that “attempts to normalize ties with Israel are doomed to fail because the overwhelming majority of Moroccans oppose it.”
Sriti urged authorities to close the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, saying, “This march sends a clear message: the Moroccan street stands with Gaza, with justice, and with freedom until the last day of occupation.”
