Morocco signs medical cannabis agreements with scientific associations

Morocco has taken a major step toward the regulated medical use of cannabis, with the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities (ANRAC) signing formal agreements with five national scientific associations.

The move establishes a framework for prescribing and distributing medicines derived from cannabis, particularly cannabidiol (CBD), in what officials describe as a “qualitative leap” for the country’s emerging medical cannabis sector.

According to information obtained by Hespress, the agreements are the result of an in-depth study conducted by ANRAC in partnership with the National Order of Physicians. The study produced detailed treatment protocols tailored to different medical specialties to ensure safe and effective use of cannabis-based medicines.

The five associations involved represent key specialties identified by scientific research as having potential therapeutic benefits from cannabis compounds: neurology, gastroenterology, dermatology, internal medicine and geriatrics.

The source said the proposed protocols were initially shared with 10 medical associations for review and feedback, reflecting ANRAC’s commitment to a participatory and inclusive approach.

Under the agreements, cannabis-based prescriptions will be subject to strict conditions. Protocols will specify case-by-case criteria, including patient age, recommended doses and treatment guidelines, to ensure responsible use.

“This is a groundbreaking step that will allow licensed operators to produce and market their products legally, creating major economic momentum nationwide,” the source said.

The agreements, signed last week, mark the culmination of efforts launched under Law 13.21 on the legal uses of cannabis. They place Morocco among the countries adopting modern health policies that leverage the therapeutic potential of cannabis within a strict legal and scientific framework.
