A 22-year-old Scottish woman was deported from Morocco after Ryanair staff prevented her from retrieving her passport from a plane seat, leaving her stranded in Marrakech without valid documents.
Rebecca McCurry, a nanny from Lochgilphead, arrived in Morocco in late July with three friends when she realised, upon disembarking, that she had left her passport on board, the Telegraph reported.
According to her account, airport staff refused to let her re-enter the aircraft. Ryanair crew later told her they had “swept the plane” and found nothing.
Hours later, passengers on the return flight discovered the passport exactly where she said she had left it, Telegraph said.
Denied entry at Marrakech airport, McCurry was questioned by Moroccan border guards before being placed on a flight back to Manchester.
“Honestly it was terrifying.” she said. “I lied and told them I had spoken to an immigration lawyer, and after that they deported me immediately.”
Though friends recovered her passport, on the return flight to Edinburgh, Ryanair took custody of it, forcing McCurry to chase for weeks. “I had to go to the airport myself and pay £30 to get my passport back,” she said.
In a statement, Ryanair confirmed the passenger “misplaced her passport onboard” and was “correctly denied entry into Marrakech,” noting that lost property is transferred to airport offices. The Office National des Aéroports in Morocco did not respond to requests for comment.
McCurry said she accepts responsibility for losing her passport, but described the chain of events as “insane,” adding that the experience has left her shaken about traveling abroad.
