The British neobank Revolut has expressed interest in the Moroccan market, Governor of Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Abdellatif Jouahri, said on Tuesday in Rabat.
Revolut, which operates in several countries around the world, was received last June by the BAM’s senior management, Jouahri recalled during a press briefing held after the BAM Board’s third quarterly meeting of 2025.
“The board of directors of the British digital bank plans to visit Rabat in October to present its projects,” he said.
In this vein, Jouahri emphasized that granting banking licenses in Morocco is based on several criteria, including the business plan, added value, experience, and respect for the overall market balance. “We cannot allow a new player to destabilize the market,” he said.
The BAM governor also noted that, in several countries, the license granted to Revolut has been limited to certain activities, insisting that Bank Al-Maghrib will adopt a similar approach, adapted to national specificities.
“When an operator applies for approval, we examine its project, its technical expertise, and its contribution to the national economy, while also looking at the profile of its founders,” he added.
The exchange with Revolut focused in particular on the Moroccan financial system, Moroccan regulations in relation to international financial approval, and the fight against money laundering, Jouahri pointed out.
