Morocco is preparing to receive its largest shipment of cattle for slaughter since the government extended a measure exempting imported livestock from customs duties, industry sources told Hespress.
Between 20,000 and 25,000 head of cattle are expected to arrive from international markets between next week and early October, the sources said. Most of the shipment — about 22,000 animals — will come from Brazil, while roughly 3,000 will be imported from Spain.
The choice of source markets largely depends on price differences, according to the same sources. Brazilian cattle are cheaper, while Spanish beef is considered higher quality but more expensive. Imports from Spain also stem from long-standing contracts between Moroccan and Spanish companies. Rising costs in European markets have slowed the pace of imports from the northern neighbor.
Earlier this year, Morocco’s Customs and Excise Administration announced the extension of a government decree suspending import duties on cattle for slaughter, raising the quota to 300,000 head.
Officials said the move aims to strengthen supplies of red meat on the domestic market. However, trade professionals have cautioned that importers are unlikely to meet the full quota in the four months left of 2025 due to global price hikes and logistical challenges.
