The Movement for the Autonomy of Kabylia (MAK) and the provisional Kabyle government in exile said they will declare independence from Algeria on December 14, calling the step a decisive moment in the struggle of the Kabyle people.
Leaders stressed that Morocco’s diplomatic support represents a vital lever for international recognition.
Ferhat Mehenni, MAK chief and head of the exiled government, told Kabyle television the push for self-determination “is not a weapon against Algerians” but a chance to build a state of their own. He accused Algerian authorities of exploiting the unresolved Kabyle issue to manufacture an “internal enemy” and obstruct democracy.
Senior MAK official Axel Belabbaci confirmed to Hespress the movement is pressing ahead with a unilateral declaration and urged foreign governments and organizations to endorse it. He warned that Algerian repression persists through arrests and trials, while international bodies have flagged the regime’s alleged links to terrorism.
