A group of 40 countries, represented by the Central African Republic, reaffirmed their support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and for the Kingdom’s autonomy initiative during the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Central African Republic’s delegate described Morocco’s autonomy plan as “serious and credible,” echoing language used by the UN Security Council.
The statement stressed that engagement between member states, the Council and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights must remain strictly bilateral and true to its original mandate, warning against political exploitation that could lead to unproductive debates.
The delegate highlighted political and economic progress in the region, citing the opening of multiple consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla as evidence of growing international support and as a driver of regional cooperation, investment and development.
Underscoring that the Sahara issue falls under the purview of the Security Council, the representative reiterated that Morocco’s autonomy plan provides a realistic and practical foundation for a lasting political settlement.
He also voiced support for relaunching the UN-led political process through the Geneva roundtables, in line with relevant resolutions, including Resolution 2756 adopted in October 2024.
The group concluded by affirming its commitment to a peaceful, consensus-based solution built on Morocco’s initiative.
