Reports of traffic fines imposed on vehicles with international license plates, intended for use outside Morocco, have circulated widely on social media in recent days.
This follows several social media posts circulating that claim “the Ifrane Gendarmerie is issuing 400 MAD fines to cars with the new registration plates, stating that they are only meant for drivers traveling abroad.”
But Morocco’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics has denied these claims.
In a statement, the Ministry said “the violations in question were actually about license plates not matching the technical standards set out in articles 61 and 61-1 of the Highway Code, and detailed in ministerial decree No. 2711.10 of September 29, 2010.”
The Ministry stressed that the fines have nothing to do with vehicles driving inside Morocco with international plates, calling that claim “contrary to what has been circulated on social media.”
It added that the Ministry remains committed to protecting citizens from fines when traveling abroad with their Moroccan-registered vehicles.
For this reason, drivers heading outside the country are allowed to use the special international license plate format, as defined in Annex 13 of the decree, and they can keep using it while driving inside Morocco as well, according to the official statement.
The Ministry has already contacted both the Royal Gendarmerie and the General Directorate of National Security, instructing them to ensure that inspectors take the Ministry’s decision into account during roadside checks.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing Morocco’s transport sector, improving the regulatory framework, and enhancing road safety for citizens and businesses.
It concluded that it remains open to questions and is always ready to clarify any rules or procedures related to transport and logistics.
