Expansion makes Morocco second-largest African avocado supplier after Kenya

Morocco has strengthened its position as one of Africa’s leading avocado producers and exporters, with output reaching 130,000 tons in the 2024/2025 season and export revenues rising to 179 million dollars, up from 128 million a year earlier, African Exponent reported on Sunday.

The country now ranks third in continental production behind Kenya and Ethiopia, ahead of South Africa and Zimbabwe.

More than 80 percent of Moroccan avocados were shipped to Europe, mainly Spain, France and the Netherlands, while new markets opened in Canada, Malaysia and Turkey.

The expansion of cultivated land from 4,000 hectares in 2018 to 12,000 in 2024 enabled Morocco to overtake South Africa as Africa’s second-largest exporter after Kenya.

However, the boom has sparked concerns at home. Oversupply and global competition drove domestic prices down by as much as 35 percent, while environmental groups warn of the strain avocado cultivation places on water resources in a drought-prone country.
