Russia carried out its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the start of the war early Sunday, killing at least two people and setting fire to the government headquarters in Kyiv, officials said.
Flames engulfed the roof of the sprawling government complex in the capital as thick smoke billowed into the sky, according to an AFP correspondent at the scene. Emergency crews rushed to contain the blaze, while police cordoned off the area and helicopters dropped water on the building.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the upper floors of the government headquarters were damaged. “We will rebuild the buildings, but we cannot bring back the lives lost. The enemy terrorizes and kills our people every day across the country,” she said in a statement on Telegram.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched at least 805 drones and 13 missiles overnight in what it described as the largest airstrike since the invasion began in February 2022. Explosions were heard across Kyiv throughout the morning.
One strike on a nine-story apartment building in western Kyiv killed a woman and her 2-month-old son, prosecutors said. Police reported that more than 10 other people were injured.
The attack marks the first time Russia has directly targeted the government headquarters in Kyiv, underscoring a dangerous escalation in the nearly three-year war.
