The Polisario Front has expressed strong discontent with new security measures introduced by the Mauritanian army to tighten control along the country’s northern border, viewing them as leaning toward Morocco’s position on the Sahara, a Mauritanian source told Hespress.
According to the same source, Polisario fighters carried out retaliatory attacks targeting artisanal gold miners. On September 4, artillery fire in the disputed Aglibat al-Foula area killed a Sudanese national and injured two others, one Sudanese and one Malian, who were transferred to a hospital in Zouérat.
A day earlier, armed elements pursued miners’ vehicles inside Mauritanian territory in the Am Zafrin area, assaulting them and seizing a car later returned after Mauritanian army intervention.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mohamed Vall Raïs has pledged to expand military presence and establish checkpoints along the frontier. Sources said a large-scale operation is being prepared to secure the border against Polisario elements and smuggling networks.
