Finance Minister Nadia Fettah Alaoui has launched consultations with major labor unions ahead of a key technical meeting on pension reform scheduled for Sept. 18 at the ministry headquarters, a union source told Hespress.
The meeting will bring together representatives from government, unions, employers and pension funds, following up on the July session of the national pension reform committee, which created the technical body tasked with studying fund sustainability and preparing reports for the national committee.
According to the union source, the proposed agenda reflects labor demands, including a detailed review of the causes of the current deficits in some retirement funds, discussion of the working methodology, and the long-term outlook of the reform process. “Unions will stand by retirees and workers in both public and private sectors,” the source said, stressing that employees should not bear the brunt of any reforms.
Union experts are expected to participate with their own data and studies to defend what they call a fair and balanced approach. The source noted that the finance minister’s call was confirmed in a formal written invitation sent to the unions.
While progress has been made on the pension file, the source said unions have yet to receive any invitation from the prime minister for the next round of social dialogue. Expectations are high that such a meeting could become the penultimate round of talks before the end of the government’s term and ahead of the legislative elections.
“The upcoming meeting with the head of government will be crucial in determining the fate of several outstanding issues, foremost among them pensions,” the source said.
