Morocco counts 32.8 million livestock heads in national census

Morocco’s national livestock census recorded a total of 32.8 million heads of cattle, sheep, goats and camels across the country between June 26 and August 11, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests announced.

The census showed 23.1 million sheep, 7.47 million goats, 2.09 million cattle and 106,044 camels.

The ministry said the operation, conducted under royal directives, aims to build an updated database to improve productivity, ensure sustainability of livestock farming and contribute to food sovereignty.

While the overall herd increased, the number of cattle and camels fell by about 30 percent compared with average levels, due to drought, irrigation cuts and the lingering effects of the pandemic.

Based on the results, customs and VAT exemptions on imported sheep, goats and powdered milk will end in September, while exemptions for cattle imports will remain. The government has allocated 11 billion dirhams in direct aid for breeders.
