A new coalition of Moroccan retirees has called for setting a minimum pension of 5,000 dirhams and introducing a “smart card” to facilitate access to hospitals and pharmacies.
The preparatory committee behind the initiative, which seeks to launch the National Coalition of Retirees and Beneficiaries, said the move aims to unite efforts and build collective strength to secure retirees’ rights.
The group’s demands include lifting the freeze on pension increases, indexing them automatically to inflation and wage growth, and improving health services through simplified access mechanisms.
Abdelaziz Rajaa, founding president of the Civil Retirees Association, told Hespress that a 5,000 dirham minimum pension would be difficult to implement given the nature of pension funds, suggesting 3,500 dirhams as a more realistic threshold.
Economist Mohamed Jedri also cautioned that structural reform of pension systems is inevitable, stressing that sustainability requires broadening the base of active contributors and ensuring governance-driven solutions.
