Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admitted supporters were justified in their frustration after his team stumbled again at the start of the Spanish league season, drawing 1-1 at home against newly promoted Elche on Sunday.
Atletico took the lead but failed to hold on, repeating a pattern from the opening round when the club lost 2-1 to Espanyol after conceding two late goals. The results leave Simeone’s side 13th in the standings with no wins from its first two matches.
“The fans are absolutely right. We share the same feeling,” Simeone told reporters after the game. “We did everything we could to win, but it didn’t happen. We’re still working to get the best out of our players, and I’m confident the results will come with patience and hard work.”
Despite the disappointing start, Simeone — who has managed Atletico since 2011 — said he remains convinced the team is on the right track. “We played two games where we deserved more than the results we got. It’s true we didn’t win, but the path is the right one,” he said.
Atletico faces another early test next week when it visits Alaves in a match that could prove decisive in shaping the club’s momentum for a season in which it hopes to rebound from recent underwhelming campaigns.
