Italy recorded 275 confirmed cases of West Nile virus, with 19 of them facing death, since the beginning of 2025, according to the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS).
A previous balance sheet of the Italian institute had reported 173 cases, including 11 deaths, last week.
Among the confirmed cases, 126 were neuro-invasive in the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, Venice, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Latium, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Sardinia, while 20 asymptomatic cases were identified in blood donors, 125 cases of fever, two asymptomatic cases, and two other symptomatic cases.
The ISS stressed that deaths were reported in the regions of Latium, Campania, Piedmont and Calabria, noting that the fatality rate calculated for the neuro-invasive forms reported and confirmed to date, is 15.1%, compared to 14% in 2024.
