Moroccan potato exports have surged significantly after several years of continuous decline, according to data from EastFruit, a regional agricultural analytics platform.
Between July 2024 and May 2025, Morocco exported 42,900 metric tons of potatoes, generating $14.9 million in revenue. The volume marks a dramatic 5.7-fold increase over the previous campaign and a 1.5-times rise compared to the 2022–2023 season.
Morocco had once reached a record high of nearly 100,000 metric tons in potato exports during the 2018–2019 campaign. However, annual volumes steadily dropped in subsequent years, hitting a low of just 7,400 metric tons in 2023–2024. This sharp decline caused Morocco to fall from the 28th to the 67th position among the world’s leading potato exporters between 2019 and 2023.
EastFruit noted that Moroccan potato exports follow a highly seasonal pattern, typically peaking between July and September and again from February to April.
The 2023–2024 campaign was severely impacted by an export ban to West African countries, which lasted from March 2023 to February 2024. Following the ban’s lift and the implementation of a new quota system, Moroccan exporters redirected their shipments toward international markets, particularly in Europe.
This strategic shift helped sustain exports despite regulatory challenges, EastFruit reported. West Africa has since regained its role as the primary destination for Moroccan potatoes, accounting for roughly half of the total exported volume. Mauritania and Mali remain the top buyers in the region.
Sales to Spain also contributed significantly to the rebound, reinforcing its status as a key market for Moroccan produce. Other countries showing notable increases in imports include France, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. In contrast, shipments to the Netherlands, Burkina Faso and Niger saw a marked decline.
The data reflects growing optimism for Morocco’s potato sector as it regains momentum in the global market.
