Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has warned of an upcoming heatwave this weekend, bringing scorching temperatures and unstable weather across several regions.
Houcine Youabed, the agency’s communications officer, said conditions will be marked by hot weather and periods of instability starting Friday. The “chergui” wind will drive high heat over northern and central inland plains, the southeast, Souss, and the southern provinces, while the eastern region will see relatively warm but less extreme conditions.
Low clouds and fog are expected along Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. In the Atlas mountains, phosphate plateau, Tadla, Rahamna, and Tansift, strong thunderstorms with gusty winds and hail are forecast. Scattered showers will also hit the southeast, Souss, Chaouia, Oulmes, Saiss, and Gharb.
Maximum temperatures on Friday will range from 38°C to 46°C in the northern and central plains, phosphate plateau, Oulmes, Saiss, Souss, the far southeast, and the interior of the southern provinces. More moderate conditions of 26°C to 34°C are expected in the High and Middle Atlas, the Mediterranean coast, and Atlantic shores. Other areas will see 34°C to 39°C.
The heat will persist Saturday, particularly in inland plains, the southeast, and the southern provinces, with localized instability in the High Atlas and southern regions. On Sunday, temperatures will climb further, especially along the Mediterranean coast, Tangier, and the deep south.
A gradual decrease is expected early next week, though the southeast and eastern Saharan provinces will remain hot.
The agency urged citizens to take precautions by avoiding direct sun during peak hours, seeking shade, drinking water frequently, and staying away from riverbeds and slopes in storm-prone areas to avoid flash floods.
