UN report finds 98.5 percent of Gaza farmland unusable

A new United Nations assessment warns that famine is tightening its grip on Gaza, with satellite data showing that nearly all cropland has been destroyed or cut off by the ongoing conflict.

According to a joint report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), 98.5 percent of farmland in Gaza is either damaged, inaccessible, or both.

Only 232 hectares, 1.5 percent of cropland, remain cultivable, down sharply from 688 hectares in April 2025, in a territory home to more than 2 million people.

The analysis also found that 12.4 percent of farmland, while physically undamaged, lies inside designated “no go” zones, making it impossible for farmers to access.

Beyond cropland losses, the conflict has devastated irrigation systems, storage facilities, markets, roads, and farm equipment, leaving local food production on the brink of collapse.
