A boat carrying a hundred migrants capsized about twenty kilometers away South-West the Italian Island Lampedusa, causing at least 20 deaths, according to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
“Twenty bodies were found and as many disappeared (…) in the shipwreck off Lampedusa, where UNHCR is assisting the survivors,” UNHCR Spokesperson, Filippo Ungaro, stated on Wednesday in his X account.
the Italian Ministry of Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, for his part, described this “tragedy that occurred today in the central Mediterranean, 14 nautical miles from Lampedusa” as “dramatic”, stressing the urgency of “relentlessly fighting against the unbridled profits of human traffickers who fuel this phenomenon”.
Since the beginning of the year, some 38,263 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior.
