Morocco’s reported interest in acquiring up to 32 US-made F-35 stealth fighters has drawn close scrutiny and debate in Spain, according to Spanish aviation outlet Aviaciondigital.
The potential deal, part of Rabat’s broader air force modernization, is viewed by some Spanish political and military circles as a development that could shift the strategic balance in the western Mediterranean.
The F-35, one of the most advanced combat aircraft in service, offers stealth capabilities, integrated avionics, and multi-role performance.
For Morocco, its acquisition would represent an immediate operational leap and strengthen strategic ties with key partners, notably the United States and Israel.
This stands in contrast to Spain’s choice to upgrade with Eurofighter Typhoons and invest in the European FCAS (Future Combat Air System) program alongside France and Germany, foregoing the F-35 to prioritize budget control and European industrial sovereignty.
Aviaciondigital notes that in Madrid, some voices warn that Morocco’s F-35 fleet could challenge Spain’s technological edge and alter the regional military equation.
Concerns extend beyond capabilities to geopolitical implications, particularly in the context of historical sensitivities and regional rivalries.
Others in Spain, however, argue for maintaining open channels with Rabat and frame the Moroccan pursuit as primarily driven by national security needs in a volatile neighborhood.
Spain’s decision to forgo the F-35 reflects a long-term bet on homegrown European defense programs, while Morocco appears focused on rapidly boosting operational capacity with proven systems.
