Morocco will send two Canadair firefighting planes to Portugal to assist with ongoing wildfires.

The Portuguese Ministry of the Interior announced the aid today, Monday, stating that Lisbon activated a bilateral cooperation mechanism after two planes from its own firefighting fleet suffered a breakdown.

The two Moroccan planes are expected to arrive later today and will join the firefighting efforts until the end of the week.

Portugal had initially requested assistance from Spain, but Spain was unable to respond due to its own increasing wildfires, which were caused by a week-long heatwave.

Late this afternoon, Portugal was battling four major fires, primarily in the northern and central parts of the country.

According to José Ribeiro, the national commander of Civil Protection, more than 1,600 firefighters, 528 vehicles, and 28 aerial units are involved. The largest fire, in the Trancoso region, has nearly 700 firefighters and five planes working to control the blaze.
