Morocco’s road safety agency reported a sharp increase in urban road fatalities in July, with deaths rising 48.9% compared to the same month last year, according to figures presented in Rabat on Tuesday.
The total number of accidents in cities rose 8.1%, while overall casualties increased 4.2%.
Nationally, however, road deaths declined 5.2%, and total casualties fell 3.2%, driven by significant improvements outside urban areas. The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) said rural crashes dropped 24.8%, with motorcycle-related deaths down 32%.
The figures were reviewed during a vigilance committee meeting chaired by Transport Minister Abdelssamad Qayouh, focusing on July’s accident record, summer traffic enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.
Authorities announced measures including speed checks for motorbikes using new devices, stricter enforcement on diplomatic and foreign-registered vehicles, and enhanced helmet compliance.
Regional monitoring committees will convene in early September to assess accident trends and corrective actions.
