French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the suspension of visa exemptions for holders of Algerian official and diplomatic passports, escalating tensions between Paris and Algiers, Le Figaro reported.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister François Bayrou, Macron called for stronger action against Algeria, citing concerns over the imprisonment of Algerian writer Boualem Sansal and French journalist Christophe Glez.
He instructed the government to formally suspend the 2013 agreement that granted visa waivers to Algerian diplomatic and official passport holders.
The move is part of a broader push for a firmer French stance on human rights issues in Algeria.
Macron’s directive includes requests for additional decisions in response to the cases, which have drawn growing criticism from press freedom and literary advocacy groups.
