Adam Aznou says he would have chosen Morocco over Spain, unlike ex-teammate Lamine Yamal

Moroccan international Adam Aznou, who recently joined Everton from Bayern Munich, said he would have chosen Morocco if he were in the place of his former Barcelona academy teammate Lamine Yamal, who opted to represent Spain.

Speaking on El After via Post United, Aznou emphasized that national team decisions must come from the heart.

“I told him jokingly, ‘I follow my heart do what you feel is right,’” Aznou said, while praising Yamal as “the best player in the world right now.”

Despite representing Spain at the U16 and U17 levels, Aznou returned to Morocco in 2023 and made his senior debut for the Atlas Lions in September 2024 under coach Walid Regragui.

The left-back said Morocco “gave me everything,” describing his allegiance as deeply emotional rather than strategic.

Aznou and Yamal remain close, having reunited in May 2025 during a match between Valladolid and Barcelona.
