Ahmed Faras, a legendary figure in Moroccan football and the first Moroccan to win the African Ballon d’Or, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness.
Faras had been battling severe health issues in recent years, with his condition worsening over the past few months. According to sources close to the family, he had been undergoing intensive treatment as the illness progressed to other parts of his body.
The former international was under close medical supervision in his final months, with doctors monitoring his response to treatment before he ultimately succumbed to the illness.
Faras holds a distinguished place in Morocco’s sporting history as the all-time top scorer for the national team. He was widely respected for his exceptional talent and leadership, both with the national squad, the “Atlas Lions,” and his lifelong club, Chabab Mohammédia.
Beyond his achievements on the field, Faras inspired generations of Moroccan footballers and remains a cherished icon in the country’s sporting legacy.
