A woman and her three children drowned Tuesday while swimming in an unsupervised area near Sidi Bounaïm beach in the coastal province of El Jadida, Hespress sources say.
The victims, who were from the village of Fokra in the Hachtouka commune, had reportedly gone to the beach to enjoy a family outing when they were swept away by powerful waves under unclear circumstances.
Local officials said members of the Royal Gendarmerie responded to the scene alongside a diving team from civil protection services. Rescue crews recovered the four bodies in stages and transferred them to the regional morgue in El Jadida.
The tragedy has sparked grief across the local community and reignited concerns over beach safety in Morocco, especially as summer temperatures draw more families to coastal areas, many of which lack lifeguards or basic supervision.
