Morocco has marked a significant breakthrough in minimally invasive gynecological surgery with the successful use of a cutting-edge technique known as v-NOTES (vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) to perform a hysterectomy on a woman in her forties.

The operation took place on Wednesday, July 9, at Souissi Maternity Hospital, part of the Ibn Sina University Hospital Center in Rabat.

This procedure represents a first not only for Morocco but also for the African continent, according to hospital officials. Conducted by a Moroccan surgical team under the guidance of French medical specialists, the operation exemplifies a new era in gynecological care, focusing on quality, reduced patient costs, and rapid recovery times.

The v-NOTES technique, which eliminates the need for external incisions by accessing internal organs through natural orifices, is regarded by many in the medical field as the future of minimally invasive surgery. In this case, the method was used to remove the uterus without making any abdominal cuts, reducing postoperative pain and leaving no visible scars.

Professor Abdelaziz Bidada, head of the Department of Gynecological and Endoscopic Surgery at Souissi Hospital, emphasized the broader implications of this innovation.

“By introducing this technique for the first time in Morocco and Africa, we are not only updating our surgical protocols but also reaffirming our commitment to medical innovation, women’s well-being, and excellence in gynecological care,” he said. He described the development as a product of nearly seven years of technical preparation and institutional cooperation.

The operation is part of a broader effort to modernize Morocco’s healthcare system and train a new generation of medical professionals in state-of-the-art procedures. Bidada noted that the surgery aligns with the nation’s ongoing health reform strategies, highlighting its role in advancing both patient care and professional development.

Hospital administrators noted the multiple benefits of v-NOTES: quicker recovery times, shorter hospital stays, reduced financial burden on patients, and a significant decrease in the risk of complications. Patients undergoing such procedures can typically return home on the same day.

Dr. Lahcen Maouni, director of the Souissi Maternity Hospital and president of the Royal Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, underscored the significance of this milestone for women’s health in Morocco.

“This surgical breakthrough introduces a new standard of care, more precise, less invasive, and more respectful of the female body. It is also a valuable opportunity for the training and continued education of emerging medical professionals,” he said.

Maouni added that the successful operation reaffirms the Souissi hospital’s status as a national and regional leader in women’s health, with the potential to serve as a model for other healthcare institutions across Morocco and Africa. He expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to raising the standard of women’s healthcare services in the region and beyond.

With this pioneering procedure, Morocco positions itself at the forefront of gynecological innovation in Africa, leveraging cutting-edge techniques to advance women’s health and set a new benchmark for surgical excellence.
