Morocco will experience a week of contrasting weather patterns, with stable and mild conditions along the coasts due to the Azores High, while intense heat persists in inland and southern regions under the influence of a Saharan thermal low, the national meteorological service reported Monday.
According to Houcine Youaabed, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Meteorology, temperatures are expected to range between 37°C and 43°C (98.6°F to 109.4°F) in the southeastern and southern regions, particularly between Monday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, low cloud cover and morning fog patches are forecast for Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, maintaining moderate weather along these areas.
“Youaabed told Hespress AR that this pattern will continue throughout the week, with a potential increase in temperatures early next week as the Saharan heat expands further westward.”
Localized thunderstorms are expected in the afternoons over the High and Middle Atlas, the Rif, and parts of eastern Morocco, accompanied by moderate to strong winds that may cause dust storms in the southeast and southern provinces.
Explaining Regional Disparities
The meteorologist explained that the temperature contrast between nearby regions is mainly due to cold marine currents that cool coastal areas, whereas inland regions lack this moderating effect. “The further inland you go, the more you feel the full force of the Saharan low, which brings hot, dry air,” he said.
In addition, mountainous terrain contributes to the development of cumulonimbus clouds and localized thunderstorms, adding to the variability in weather even between neighboring areas.
Maritime Forecast
An updated marine vigilance map reviewed by Hespress shows strong winds forecast off southern coastal areas between Cape Boujdour and Danford Point on Tuesday, July 8, with a yellow alert level indicating localized, moderate risks.
For Monday, most coastal areas, both Mediterranean and Atlantic, remain calm, except for gusty winds south of Cape Boujdour.
Sea conditions are expected to be:
- Calm in the Mediterranean
- Calm to slight in the Strait of Gibraltar
- Slight to moderate north of Mehdia
- Moderate to rough to very rough along the rest of the Atlantic coast
