French authorities announced on Thursday a 75% surge in anti-Muslim acts across the country during the first five months of 2025 compared to the previous year. Attacks on individuals within this category have tripled.
The Interior Ministry reported 145 anti-Muslim acts were recorded by mid-2025, a significant jump from 83 such acts in the same period of 2024. Attacks targeting individuals rose by an alarming 209%, reaching a total of 99 incidents, up from 32 in 2024. These personal assaults now account for over two-thirds of all anti-Muslim acts. This data comes after a young Malian man, Aboubacar Cisse, was killed in a mosque in southern France in late April, sparking widespread anger.
While anti-Semitic acts saw a 24% decrease, with 504 recorded by mid-2025 compared to 662 in the same period last year, the Interior Ministry noted a “very high level” for this category. The majority of these (64%) were also attacks on individuals.
Additionally, anti-Christian acts increased by 13%, with 322 recorded in 2025 compared to 284 in 2024. Attacks on individuals within this group nearly doubled, reaching 51 incidents in the first five months of 2025.
Muslims constitute approximately 9% of France’s population. The country also hosts Europe’s largest Jewish community, numbering around 500,000 people (less than 1% of the population).
