Authorities on Wednesday announced the dismantling of a terrorist cell composed of four extremists aged between 20 and 27, operating between the cities of Tetouan and Chefchaouen in northern Morocco.
The operation was conducted by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), under the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), as part of ongoing preventive security measures aimed at countering terrorist threats and subversive plots targeting the Kingdom’s stability.
Searches at the suspects’ homes uncovered a handwritten pledge of allegiance to the self-proclaimed emir of the terrorist organization Daesh, along with a video recording of the allegiance ceremony.
According to the BCIJ statement, investigators also seized a Daesh flag, a black outfit with extremist markings, and several replica weapons, including a scoped rifle and two pistols, as well as multiple electronic devices now undergoing in-depth forensic analysis.
Field investigations revealed the cell had entered an advanced operational phase.
The suspects had conducted field tests in a mountainous area near Tetouan in preparation for manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs), in alignment with Daesh’s broader destabilization agenda.
Further inquiries confirmed that the group recorded their allegiance to Daesh’s current self-declared leader in a bid to gain the organization’s endorsement for their planned attacks.
All four individuals have been placed in custody under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office specializing in terrorism cases. The investigation seeks to uncover the cell’s potential connections and fully clarify the scope of their activities and affiliations.
