The United States could be rethinking its military presence in southern Europe. Former US Senator Robert Greenway has proposed relocating two major American bases from Spain to Morocco, arguing that now is the right time for such a move.
This idea comes as relations between Washington and Madrid grow increasingly strained.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has refused to raise Spain’s defense spending to 5% of GDP, despite pressure from allies and repeated demands from former US President Donald Trump.
Sanchez insists that Spain will not increase its military budget beyond 2.1%, a stance that has frustrated Trump and other American officials.Diplomatic sources told Vozpópuli that Morocco is watching the situation closely. The country sees a unique chance to strengthen its role as a key US partner in the region.
King Mohammed VI has good ties with Trump, especially after the former president supported Morocco’s claims over the Sahara.
That support was never reversed by Joe Biden, solidifying the partnership.
If the US decides to move its air bases from Rota and Morón, two strategic hubs that have long anchored American military operations in Europe and North Africa, it could bring big economic and geopolitical changes.
Some observers warn that Spain risks losing influence and economic benefits linked to the bases.
Meanwhile, Morocco could gain new military cooperation deals and more visibility on the international stage.
The debate picked up speed after Greenway posted his proposal on social media, calling this a “unique opportunity” to reshape alliances.
While it remains unclear whether Washington will seriously consider the move, Trump has often made unpredictable decisions in foreign policy.
For now, Spanish officials are trying to downplay the possibility of losing the bases, but the pressure to boost defense spending isn’t likely to fade anytime soon.
