IAV administration pledges to build before demolition, students remain unconvinced

Students at the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (IAV) said a meeting with the administration on Thursday failed to offer clear or satisfactory alternatives to the planned demolition of several campus dormitories as part of a road expansion project.

They vowed to “continue with more protests until their demands are met, refusing to accept what they perceive as delays or vague assurances.”

This meeting, the second with the IAV administration, comes after students announced an open strike earlier this week and engaged in other protests in response to the demolition decision, which is expected to affect the academic and living conditions of over 1,500 students.

An IAV student, speaking anonymously to Hespress English, said the administration called for a meeting with the Student Office following the announcement of the open strike.

The students expected to discuss possible solutions and alternatives to the planned demolition of several campus dormitories, but according to the student, “the tone of the meeting felt tense. The student said that “the representatives’ intervention was interrupted.”

The same source added that “the administration assured them construction of a new dormitory would take place before demolition,” but failed to provide clear answers about “practical or time-bound guarantees, as well as a clear timeline or concrete implementation plan.”

According to the student, the absence of a timeline or specific details made the promise feel more like a verbal reassurance than a concrete commitment

IAV students, the same source mentioned, proposed an official statement signed by the institute director and the relevant ministry, “committing to build before any demolition takes place” as a guarantee.

The source stressed that “building before demolition is impossible,” noting that while construction has made no progress, demolition is moving forward, with roads mapped out and dormitories treated “like ordinary buildings, as if they aren’t student housing.”

The planned demolition of dormitories—mainly buildings 5, 4, 10, 9, and 11—is tied to a 2030 development plan that includes road expansion.

IAV students said, “they remain in a state of uncertainty, doubt, and discouragement as their campus dormitories continue to be under threat.”

They emphasized that “while they support the public interest, they oppose any projects that come at the students’ expense or exclude them from decisions that directly impact their lives.”

IAV students previously held their first meeting with the administration before announcing an open strike, but said the meeting failed to produce any concrete solutions, describing “the administration’s responses as lacking seriousness.”

They also rejected any decision made without their involvement, knowledge, or invitation to dialogue, stressing their right to be part of the decision-making process.
