Getech, a global leader in locating subsurface resources, and Sound Energy plc, a transition energy company, have formally established a new joint venture, HyMaroc Limited, to accelerate the exploration of natural hydrogen and helium resources in Morocco.
The formation of the equally owned subsidiary follows an Exploration Collaboration Agreement signed between the two companies on 28 October 2024.
Under this agreement, the parties committed to a regional screening study aimed at identifying high-potential areas for further exploration.
That study has now been completed, with results pointing to regions of significantly elevated favourability for natural hydrogen and helium accumulation.
With these promising findings, HyMaroc Limited has been established to secure exclusive rights to explore and exploit hydrogen and helium resources in the Kingdom.
This comes as Morocco emerges as a key destination for natural hydrogen exploration, backed by favourable geological conditions and a strategically important location.
The Kingdom’s extensive onshore basins, rich in subsurface resources, are considered prime candidates for natural hydrogen discoveries.
The joint venture marks a strategic step toward progressing geophysical surveys and drilling operations to assess and potentially unlock subsurface hydrogen and helium deposits, according to the same source.
“Getech’s unique hydrogen and helium exploration workflows are built on the twin foundations of our hugely valuable global geophysics data and our ability to understand and model the genetic factors involved in their formation,” said Getech’s Chief Business Development Officer, Max Brouwers.
He explained that the company categorises the geological systems involved in hydrogen and helium formation “into sources, migration paths, reservoirs, traps and seals – in much the same way as the petroleum industry has successfully done for many decades.”
Brouwers added that the new joint venture enhances Getech’s exploration capabilities without requiring significant up-front expenditure and allows both companies to maintain commercial flexibility as they move into more detailed, local-scale studies and begin securing exploration acreage.
