The Reformist Movement (MR) group in the Brussels Parliament has proposed a resolution to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and to open a Brussels economic office in southern Morocco, according to Belgian media reports.
Framed as a move in proactive economic diplomacy, the proposal aims to support Brussels businesses in expanding internationally and to strengthen ties with Morocco, a key strategic partner for Belgium.
“It’s time for Brussels to act with unity and engage concretely with Morocco, a stable, reliable, and essential player in Africa,” said a member of the Reformist Movement, Amin El Boujdaini. “Southern Morocco’s rapid development offers major opportunities we shouldn’t miss,” he added.
Highlighting the growth of Dakhla and Laayoune—industrial zones, green energy, and a strategic port—the Belgian party argues that establishing a local presence linked to hub.brussels office in Rabat would help SMEs seize new market opportunities.
The resolution also positions Moroccan sovereignty as a factor in regional stability, with Morocco playing a key role in combating terrorism and extremism, while also developing viable economic models. “Our proposal is part of a logic of strategic partnership, security, and shared growth,” concluded El Boujdaini.
This proposal builds on the visit of the party President Georges-Louis Bouchez on May 14, 2025, to Morocco, where he engaged in high-level discussions to deepen judicial and security cooperation and reaffirm Belgium’s commitment to a long-term strategic partnership with Morocco.
He also reaffirmed his party’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and highlighted the importance of the autonomy plan as the only credible path towards a lasting, realistic, and peaceful solution to the region’s long-standing conflict.
During his trip, Bouchez also announced the submission of a bill to the Federal Parliament aimed at recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and endorsing the autonomy plan.
This initiative comes amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region, where recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty is increasingly seen by some European actors as essential to promoting peace, stability, and economic cooperation.
The Belgian group sees the resolution as a responsible move toward peace. It aims to clarify Belgium’s position at a time when historic neutrality no longer fits current geopolitical realities, while still respecting international law and supporting a realistic solution based on facts on the ground.
