Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced Monday that over $700 million will be invested in gas pipelines connecting a planned natural gas terminal in Nador to the Maghreb-Europe pipeline and the industrial zones of Mohammedia and Kenitra.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, Benali said the platform project is currently in the “expression of interest” phase, which will remain open until July 23, with several investors having already submitted feedback.
On the broader natural gas strategy, Benali revealed that Morocco held consultations with OPEC and OPEC+ countries over the past weekend to ensure energy sovereignty and infrastructure development.
She assured MPs that despite global crises, Morocco remains committed to securing reliable gas access and building sovereign infrastructure.
Rejecting any claim of underperformance in green hydrogen efforts, Benali highlighted Morocco’s potential to become a regional leader. “If we want to become the Saudi Arabia of green hydrogen, now is the time to harness our strategic assets, our proximity to Europe, renewable energy reserves, industrial base, and logistics infrastructure,” she said.
She also announced that Morocco is working on seven green energy projects expected to generate over 20 GW, double the country’s current installed capacity, with minimal water requirements.
These projects also contribute to water sovereignty through competitive desalination capabilities.
Benali said that the government has tripled annual renewable energy investments and quintupled investment in the power grid while advancing regional decentralization. The national hydrogen roadmap, she added, is a clear sign that Morocco is on the path toward a meaningful energy transition.
