Morocco among lowest performers in global gender equality index

Morocco remains among the world’s lowest-ranking countries on gender equality, according to the 2025 edition of the Global Gender Gap Report released by the World Economic Forum.

Ranked 137th out of 148 countries, Morocco shows no progress from its 2024 position, slipping further from the modest gains made in 2023, when it ranked 136th.

The index, which measures actual gender parity rather than overall development, highlights Morocco’s structural stagnation in closing gender gaps, particularly in economic participation and professional opportunities, where the country ranks a troubling 143rd.

This reflects low female labor market inclusion, limited access to leadership positions, and weak representation in high-skilled sectors, despite isolated efforts to support female entrepreneurship.

The education index presents a slightly better picture, with Morocco ranking 114th, reflecting modest improvements in girls’ enrollment and access to higher education, but regional and socioeconomic disparities continue to limit long-term structural change.

In politics, Morocco ranks 91st, buoyed by gender quotas that have improved parliamentary and ministerial representation. Yet deep gaps persist in strategic decision-making spaces, especially in the executive branch and diplomacy.

Health and survival remain critical weaknesses, with Morocco ranked 136th, due to limited reproductive health access, high maternal mortality, and life expectancy gaps.

Regionally, Morocco is second in the Maghreb—behind Tunisia (123rd) and ahead of Algeria (141st), and 10th among Arab countries, far behind the UAE (69th). On the African continent, it ranks 27th, trailing countries like Namibia, Cape Verde, and South Africa.
