Morocco is participating in a pilot project on the island of Majorca aimed at building a fully functional green hydrogen ecosystem. Part of the Green Hysland initiative, the project brings together eleven countries, including nine from the European Union, alongside Chile and Morocco.
The project is designed to test a real-life urban hydrogen model that could later be replicated elsewhere.
The project aligns with Morocco’s low-carbon strategy, targeting net zero emissions by 2050. Through its involvement, the country gains access to technical, economic, environmental, and regulatory insights to inform its national rollout across sectors such as industry, mobility, and tourism.
Funded by the European Commission with ten million euros, Green Hysland aims to produce 330 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, cutting 20,700 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Solar energy will power the production, with hydrogen distributed across transport, industry, and energy sectors.
Morocco is represented by the Moroccan Association for Hydrogen and Sustainable Development, closely monitoring project developments for national application.
