A total of 33 sites in Morocco — including 28 beaches, a mountain lake, and four marinas — have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag label for the 2025 summer season, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection said on Tuesday.
The international ecolabel, granted annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), recognizes high standards in water quality, environmental education, safety, and sustainable management. The label has been supported in Morocco since 2002 by the Foundation, chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa.
With these awards, Morocco ranks 21st globally out of 50 countries, while leading the Arab world and placing second in Africa in the number of Blue Flag sites.
All 27 beaches previously awarded the label in 2024 have retained it, reflecting sustained efforts by local authorities, civil society groups, and private partners to maintain compliance with Blue Flag criteria. One new site — Sol Beach in Tangier-Assilah province — joined the list this year.
Awarded beaches include Oued Laou, Essaouira, Arekmane, El Haouzia, Sidi Rahal (4th tranche), Bouznika, Ba Kacem, M’diq, Riffienne, Sidi Ifni, Saïdia Municipale, Saïdia Ouest tourist station, Dalia, Achakar, Sol, Bedouza, Safi Municipale, Souiria Lakdima, Aglou, Imin Tourgha, Oum Labouir, Foum el Oued, Skhirate, Sidi Abed, Les Nations, Aïn Diab Extension, Al Minaa, and East Marina Smir.
Aguelmam Azigza, a mountain lake located in Khénifra National Park, also renewed its Blue Flag status. Set between cliffs and ancient cedar forests in the Middle Atlas, the lake is the first natural freshwater site in Morocco to earn the designation. It has been upgraded through a development project improving access, sanitation, camping areas, and visitor services.
Tanja Marina Bay in Tangier has been awarded the Blue Flag for the first time, joining Saïdia (2018), Est Marina Smir (2022), and Al Hoceïma (2023). Opened in 2018, Tanja Marina Bay is now the Kingdom’s largest marina with 1,400 berths. Its environmental infrastructure and services for yachtsmen met the rigorous standards of the ecolabel, the Foundation said.
Blue Flag certification is based on four main criteria: bathing water quality, environmental education, safety and services, and environmental management. Sites are subject to regular, unannounced inspections during the summer season.
