Morocco’s Ministry of Interior has dismissed Farid Chourak from his position as Wali (Governor) of the Marrakesh-Safi region and Prefect of Marrakesh, following the circulation of a controversial video during Eid al-Adha, Hespress AR has learned from informed sources.
The decision, described as unexpected, was accompanied by the appointment of Rachid Benchikhi, the current governor of Al-Haouz province, as acting Wali until King Mohammed VI appoints a permanent replacement.
The dismissal follows the widespread sharing of a video showing Chourak performing the traditional Eid sacrifice while publicly stating it was “on behalf of the region’s residents.” The video triggered heated public debate on social media and raised concerns among commentators about the symbolic and administrative appropriateness of such a gesture.
Sources indicate that the Ministry’s decision is part of a broader effort to reinforce the principle of accountability and to ensure strict compliance with the ethical and legal obligations expected of public officials.
A senior source told Hespress AR that Chourak’s summons to the Interior Ministry’s central services in Rabat constitutes a preliminary administrative measure, often used before launching a full investigation into whether the official’s actions overstepped the limits of his authority.
The Ministry has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
