Morocco’s Secretary of State for Fisheries, Zakia Driouich, met Tuesday in Nice with International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez on the sidelines of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3).
The two officials reviewed key areas of mutual interest, including maritime safety in the fishing sector, pollution prevention, the training of seafarers, and the implementation of international instruments promoting responsible and sustainable fishing practices.
Both sides welcomed the strength of Morocco–IMO cooperation and expressed a shared commitment to deepening it, particularly in the areas of capacity building, compliance with safety regulations, and environmental protection at sea.
Driouich reaffirmed Morocco’s dedication to sustainable and secure fisheries management, noting the Kingdom’s active role in ratifying over 30 IMO conventions and protocols, including SOLAS and MARPOL, which govern maritime safety and pollution control.
The meeting forms part of Morocco’s broader efforts at UNOC 3 to reinforce international partnerships and advocate for sustainable ocean governance.
The IMO has developed several key frameworks for the fishing sector, including the 2012 Cape Town Agreement, the STCW-F Convention on crew training standards, and safety guidelines produced jointly with the FAO and ILO to enhance working conditions for fishermen.
