Spanish imports of fresh Moroccan fruits and vegetables grew sharply in the first quarter of 2025, rising by 24 percent in volume and 23 percent in value compared to the same period last year.
Total imports reached 188,076 tons, worth €481 million, according to data from Spanish produce exporters’ association FEPEX.
Morocco became Spain’s fastest-growing foreign supplier, with tomatoes leading the surge. Tomato imports rose 34 percent in volume to 32,313 tons and 57 percent in value to €52.5 million.
Peppers ranked second, reaching 32,046 tons, with a slight decline in volume but a 4 percent rise in value. Green beans saw a 17 percent drop in volume and a 12 percent decrease in value.
FEPEX warned that Moroccan competition, bolstered by the EU-Morocco partnership agreement, is undermining Spanish producers and called for urgent review of the trade terms. The association stressed concerns over food sovereignty and unequal standards between EU and non-EU products.
