Report: 76% of Moroccans prefer ride-hailing over traditional taxis

A recent study conducted by Group Sunergia in partnership with L’Economiste found that 76% of Moroccans prefer ride-hailing services to traditional small taxis, especially among young adults aged 18 to 24 and residents in the northern and eastern regions. In contrast, just 4% of respondents expressed a preference for traditional taxis.

The report, titled “Taxis vs. Ride-Hailing Apps: Moroccans Split Between Old and New Models,” points to a generational and geographic divide in attitudes toward urban transport. While ride-hailing services are widely seen as a modern and necessary solution to improve mobility, their actual usage remains limited.

Despite the strong preference for ride-hailing, only 18% of Moroccans have used these platforms. Usage is most common among women, residents of urban centers, people aged 18 to 34, and those from higher-income backgrounds.

Conversely, 82% of respondents have never used ride-hailing apps. Non-users are more likely to be men, individuals aged 45 to 64, residents of rural areas, and people from lower socio-economic groups.

Among those who have not used these apps, 40% cited unfamiliarity with the platforms, 26% said they had no need for them, 16% reported lack of availability in their areas, and 15% indicated they already owned a vehicle.

The report reveals a notable concentration around a single platform: 96% of ride-hailing users reported using InDrive. The company has significantly expanded its reach in Morocco, now operating in 10 cities and working with more than 50,000 drivers. In 2024, InDrive became the most downloaded transportation app in the country.

However, the majority of users engage with the service sporadically—69% said they use ride-hailing apps only occasionally, and just 7% reported using them daily. Daily users were primarily in the 35 to 44 age group.

Perceptions of quality and safety are overwhelmingly positive. A striking 97% rated the service quality as very good, while 95% said they felt safe using the apps. Safety ratings were particularly high among young adults, seniors over 65, and residents in rural areas as well as the North and East. Only 5% of respondents expressed concerns about safety.

The findings underscore a transportation landscape in transition, where modern platforms are gaining popularity but still face barriers to widespread adoption, particularly among older and rural populations. As ride-hailing continues to expand, the gap between preference and usage suggests room for further growth and integration into Morocco’s urban mobility system.
