Morocco’s national customs unit is preparing a major operation targeting networks involved in smuggling and distributing untaxed alcohol across the country, sources told Hespress.
The initial phase will focus on Casablanca and Marrakech, with raids planned in upscale bars, restaurants, storage sites, and private residences suspected of housing contraband.
The operation follows alerts from the Interior Ministry and customs risk analysis units, which flagged suspicious drops in alcohol license renewals and the growing presence of unidentified spirits sold below market prices in licensed venues.
Investigations suggest that counterfeit tax stamps are being affixed to these bottles by well-organized networks banking on summer demand to move large quantities of high-end smuggled liquor.
Sources also revealed that some goods are trafficked through Mauritanian ports and trucked into Morocco via remote land routes, then repackaged and sold through a network of carefully selected distributors. Estimated revenues exceed 170 million dirhams, representing major tax losses. Authorities are expected to impose steep fines on violators.
