In a sweeping cultural crackdown, Russia is targeting globally acclaimed franchises such as Game of Thrones, Sex and the City, and Harry Potter, accusing them of promoting what the state deems “childfree ideology.”
This follows a recent law banning what authorities call the “public propaganda of the ideas of voluntarily choosing not to have children.”
The measure is part of a broader state-driven push to reverse the country’s declining birth rate, a growing concern for the Kremlin.
Starting September 1, Roskomnadzor, Russia’s federal communications watchdog, will enforce a ban on distributing media that, in its view, promotes childlessness.
According to the state-run Parliamentary Newspaper, content portraying childfree lifestyles in a positive light or framing parenthood negatively will be denied distribution certificates.
Authorities argue that such portrayals distort social norms and discourage family formation, threatening the country’s demographic future.
