King Mohammed VI of Morocco, in his capacity as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, reaffirmed his country’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause during the 34th Arab League Summit held Saturday in Baghdad. In a speech delivered on his behalf by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan monarch issued a strong call for an immediate cessation of military operations in Gaza and a return to the negotiating table to revive the ceasefire agreement as a first step toward a permanent end to hostilities.
The King described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as catastrophic, questioning the global and humanitarian standards applied to the Palestinian tragedy amid repeated violations of international and humanitarian law. He warned that the continuation of the current conditions poses a serious threat to regional stability and urged the Arab world to act decisively.
To de-escalate the conflict and prevent further civilian suffering, King Mohammed VI proposed urgent action, including an immediate end to the military aggression, the restoration of a ceasefire, and a halt to Israeli assaults in the West Bank, particularly the demolition of homes and the displacement of residents.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and launching a comprehensive reconstruction plan under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority, with strong Arab and international backing, and without forced displacement of the population.
The King reaffirmed Morocco’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, stressing that this remains the cornerstone of any just and lasting peace. He added that Palestinian national reconciliation is essential for strengthening the Palestinian position in future negotiations and for unifying efforts toward achieving legitimate rights.
As head of the Al-Quds Committee, King Mohammed VI emphasized Morocco’s continued commitment to defending the religious and cultural heritage of Jerusalem.
He highlighted the country’s dual approach of political and diplomatic engagement combined with fieldwork through the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency, which implements tangible projects to improve the living conditions of Jerusalem’s residents and support their resilience in the face of ongoing pressures.
