Minister of agriculture, Ahmed El Bouari, confirmed that his ministry is preparing a program for the 2025/2026 season to support livestock farmers and enhance national herd productivity.
This initiative follows the royal directive calling for the cancellation of the Eid al-Adha sacrifice ritual this year.
Speaking during a parliamentary Q&A session on Monday, El Bouari noted that these measures will give the national herd an opportunity to reproduce, allowing it to gradually return to healthier levels in the coming years.
The minister explained that Morocco’s livestock sector has been severely affected by successive years of drought, leading to a sharp drop in livestock numbers.
This, El Bouari said, has negatively impacted the availability of red meat in markets.
He attributed the herd decline primarily to reduced grazing resources caused by drought, as well as rising prices for animal feed.
El Bouari highlighted that the government has prioritized feed support by distributing subsidized barley for sheep and goats and compound feed for cattle, aiming to stabilize the sector and support breeders through this challenging period.
