McDonald’s reported mixed first-quarter results, with U.S. same-store sales falling 3.6%, the largest domestic drop since the 2020 Covid lockdowns.
This marks the second consecutive quarterly decline, driven by lower guest counts, cautious consumer spending, and bad weather.
The decline was sharper than analysts’ 1.7% forecast. Net income slipped to $1.87 billion from $1.93 billion a year ago, partly due to the Leap Day in 2024.
CEO Chris Kempczinski noted broadening economic pressures, as traffic from low- and middle-income consumers both fell nearly double digits year-over-year.
Analysts also flagged Donald Trump’s tariffs as shaking markets and deepening consumer unease.
Despite a 1% global same-store sales dip, Kempczinski remains confident McDonald’s can outperform competitors, though it isn’t immune to industry volatility. McDonald’s shares slipped 2% in premarket trading
